Family Photos can feel overwhelming when considering what everyone will wear. With over 14 years of Family Portrait experience, here are a few tips and tricks on figuring out how to dress for your next session.
Consider the Weather
New York Capital Region and New England weather can be pretty extreme. Always consider what the temperature will be for your Family session. Winter, Spring and Fall can be fairly cold so you’ll definitely want to dress accordingly. Dressing in layers can help.

Decide your Vibe
Do you want casual family photos or maybe something a little elevated? Are you super trendy with your everyday wardrobe? Decide on the vibe you want for yours session before committing to a color scheme. There is no wrong answer.

Use Clothing you already Wear
I always prefer my Clients are comfortable above everything. If you buy something new that you aren’t comfortable in, it will show in the photos. Pick outfits you feel confident in.

Pick a Color Palete
Popular themes are: Fall tones, Jewel tones, Black and Grey, Jeans and Black, Earth tones, Blue and Jean, Beige and Gold and Brown… the choices are endless. Consider your location and backdrop before you choose your colors to avoid clashing or blending in too much. Avoid neon and bright colors as it shows up on your skin which isn’t great for photos.

Pick One Pattern and the rest solids
This is the easiest way to coordinate your family wardrobe. I always suggest picking out your favorite patterned outfit and then finding complimenting solids for the kids and your partner. Use the colors within your pattern to pick out the solids. Once you have your pattern the rest of the family options will fall into place.

Be Comfortable!
I think the single most important part of picking your Outfits is making sure you are Comfortable and your clothing fits properly. Wear clothes that make you feel awesome about yourself.

Family Outfits – What NOT to Wear
No Sports Teams (unless it’s a themed shoot)
No logos or words on shirts
No neon or bright colors
No uncomfortable or outfits you feel bad in
Not too many patterns – stick to one and compliment with the same colors
No princess dresses or costumes
